Position Title: Clear Creek Watershed Soil Conservation Technician
Employment Term: two-year full-time position with potential for term extension
Education: High school graduate required. Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or other natural resources related field is preferred.

Salary and Benefits: Salary to be determined and will be based on experience. Position includes Holiday Pay, Discretionary Pay, allowance for health insurance and Iowa Public Employment Retirement System.

Description of Duties:
- Develop resource management/conservation plans and implement best management practices that are designed to maintain or improve the quality of the targeted water supplies in the project areas (which includes sub watersheds in both Iowa and Johnson Counties). Examples of practices to be implemented may include nutrient and pest management, livestock manure management, reduced or no till farming, terraces, water and sediment control basins, grass seeding, stream bank or riparian management and other permanent and management practices. The Watershed Coordinator will be knowledgeable of innovative and traditional application of techniques of water quality conservation practices.
- Research, plan and conduct an information and education program to raise the awareness and encourage implementation of practices. This will include promotional efforts and collaborating with appropriate agencies, groups, and individuals that can affect the success of the project. This will involve planning and carrying out group meetings as well as meeting one on one with project cooperators and sponsors. Employee will perform professional and technical duties that relate to water quality monitoring, information education, and implementing of best management practices. Employee will be responsible for anticipating and solving potential problems and maximizing communication with all project participants.
- Provide administrative support and manage the project to maintain quality control and to maximize communication with and involvement of local advisors and state and local staff of participating agencies. Completes monthly, quarterly, annual and final reports per contract agreement.

Salary and Benefits: $27,000-$32,000 annually depending on experience and qualifications - Position includes Holiday Pay, Discretionary Pay, allowance for Health Insurance and Iowa Public Employment Retirement System.

Description of Duties:
Under the direction of the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District, perform duties related to the promotion, wise use and management of natural resources in Johnson County, Iowa.
Conservation Planning
- Advise and work with landowners, public officials, and government agencies, to develop and implement soil and water conservation plans for farms, developing areas, public lands, and other land uses.
- Coordinate and manage both broad and specialized projects to carry out soil and water conservation programs.
- Perform plat reviews as requested by the Johnson County Planning and Zoning Department.

Conservation Education and Outreach
- Carry out activities relating to the Soil and Water Conservation District’s conservation education and outreach efforts.
- Prepare information for area media outlets regarding conservation accomplishments, events, progress and special projects.
- Develop partnerships with county government agencies and local groups to strengthen the base of support for natural resources protection, and build positive public relations.
- Work cooperatively with the County Secondary Roads Department to implement measures that facilitate management and improve the condition of land adjacent to county roads.

Technical Applications
- Perform routine engineering surveys & designs in order to install various conservation practices.
- Conduct wetland determinations and mitigation plans for private landowners as well as county government agencies as requested.
- Write grants to secure funding for conservation and environmental improvement in the county.
- Prepare geo-spatial databases and associated visual aids to communicate conservation needs and progress to diverse audiences.

Other Duties

- Prepare and present effective progress reports to the District Commissioners and the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on a quarterly basis.
- Attend monthly Soil and Water Conservation District meetings.
- Other duties may be required and assigned as deemed appropriate by the Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners.
